🕌 Taj Mahal – Overview
-
Built between 1632–1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to honor his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
-
A masterpiece of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles. Made of white marble with intricate inlays of precious stones.
-
Located in Agra on the southern banks of the Yamuna River, it’s a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
📜 History
-
Construction began around 1632, led by a workforce of ~20,000 artisans and craftsmen under architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
-
Originally included a main mausoleum, guest house (now a mosque), and formal gardens laid out in the traditional Charbagh (four-square) style.
-
After Shah Jahan’s deposition in the 1650s, he was interred in the mausoleum beside Mumtaz, under a simple black marble cenotaph facing hers.
